Outline for Mentoring Program for
the
First-Year Teacher
Objective: To prepare first-year teachers for the
day-to-day challenges faced in the classroom and
to provide professional support and developmentDescription
of Program: First-year and alternate route teachers
will meet monthly as a group with a designated
mentor to discuss relevant topics with the intent
of providing techniques and strategies for improvement
in classroom management. The mentor will also conduct
classroom observations on a regular basis for first
year teachers in the program and will meet with
all program teachers individually as needed.
With the completion of the program, first year teachers
and alternate route candidates will receive a certificate
from the mentor and principal denoting satisfactory
completion of the required program.
Any part of this program may be utilized by current
teachers as a continuing education enrichment activity.
Description of Meetings: Each meeting will focus
on a specific topic (as selected by the mentor) and
will include mentor-guided group discussions, video
presentations, and introduction of relevant support
materials and tools for teachers in the program.
The teachers will have the opportunity to share ideas,
discuss challenges, and receive instructions, tips,
techniques, and strategies for improvement of their
classroom management and performance.
